The 125 cc commuter motorcycle segment in India is already full as the segment attracts a lot of buyers. If seen, Honda SP 125 is the best selling motorcycle in this segment, but now TVS has launched its new TVS Raider 125 to give tough competition to this motorcycle, which is stylish, attractive and powerful with the trend. Jagran’s auto journalist Ankit Dubey reviewed the bike in detail by visiting TVS’s Hosur plant and in this review article, we will tell you what Ankit Dubey has to say about this commuter as well as the sporty bike.
At first glance, TVS Raider 125 looks quite attractive and it is more sporty bike than a commuter. Truth be told, it looks to be the most premium motorcycle in the 125 cc segment. The new headlamps give the Raider a distinct identity and the 125 cc motorcycle is nowhere to be seen. Customers are going to like the new full-LED unit a lot.
The 10-litre fuel tank looks macho and the black finish and sharp design on the tank seems to fail even the 150 cc motorcycle. In the rear, you get to see the sporty design with the commuter. The single grab rail and plastic panels made of alloy give a very functional look. The 80/100 section at the front and the 100/90 section at the rear, the 17-inch tires look great. What’s more, the gas-charged 5-step adjustable mono-shock coupled with well-fitted tires make it completely sporty. The weight of the bike is 123 kg and the company did not give the tires too wide because the mileage could have been affected and the buyers of this segment pay the most attention to the mileage.
The paint finish is good, the plastic quality is also very strong. Truth be told, the exhaust note seems to beat other motorcycles in this segment and it is going to be very much liked by the customers.
In TVS Raider 125, the company has given a reverse LCD display, which gives all the information that you get from a premium motorcycle. The small unit houses all the information, including trip meters, distance to empty indicator, idle start/stop indicator and average speed record. Apart from this, the side-stand cut-off switch is also given as a safety feature in the bike. Along with the current trend, TVS SmartXonnect is also going to offer Bluetooth function which will be in the top variant. In this, many features will be seen as call and SMS alerts, navigation, digi locker and app-based features.
Talking about the riding position, the company has given an upright riding position in it, which is sporty as well as comfortable. Split seats have been given for a sporty look and they are quite comfortable too. The seat height is 780 mm, due to which even people of 5 feet length can ride it easily. The wheelbase is 1,326 mm and it gets a ground clearance of 180 mm.
Power Specifications and Performance
In TVS Raider 125, the company has given a 3-valve 124.8 cc air-cooled engine. This engine generates power of 11.2 bhp at 7,500 rpm and torque of 11.2 Nm at 6,000 rpm. While driving, you will start saying at first turn that this is the best performing motorcycle in the segment till date. Power delivery is progressive and the 5-speed transmission works great. The engine gives a comfortable response in fifth gear. TVS says that it has a top speed of 99 kmph, but it has been driven at a top speed of up to 105 kmph with Power Mode on the test track at TVS’s Hosur plant.
Talking about the modes, let us tell you that it gets two ride modes – Eco and Power, which are being offered on a motorcycle for the first time in the segment. There won’t be much difference between the two modes, but you will definitely get a lovely ride with great mileage on the Eco and the Raider tries to give a slightly aggressive ride on the power mode. TVS claims that the Idle Start/Stop technology gives the motorcycle a mileage of over 60 kmpl and this is what the Raider showed during our tests.
The bike has been quite agile during cornering, but the tires have shaken our confidence a bit. However, the company has maintained a perfect balance between a commuter and a sporty setup. The front gets telescopic forks which are quite soft and they claim to deliver excellent ride quality.
Talking about braking, we have run a variant with disc brake in the front and drum brake in the rear. However, the base model gets drum brakes on both the front and rear. Well, with the disc brakes the rider also applies the heavy brakes at high speed so he does not lose control and braking is proving to be the best in the segment in the real sense.
price and competition
The starting price of TVS Raider 125 is Rs 77,500 which goes up to Rs 85,469 for the top-variant. These prices are very competitive. Only Hero Glamor is priced lower than Raider, but the prices of TVS Raider are being seen lower than Bajaj Pulsar 125, Pulsar NS 125 and Honda Shine SP 125.
TVS Raider has proved to be the best motorcycle ever in the 125 cc segment in terms of prices, features and power. If seen, customers will like it very much with its sporty looks and features. For those in the age group of 18 to 28 who are dreaming of their first motorcycle and want a motorcycle that matches their lifestyle at an affordable price, then TVS Raider will prove to be the best motorcycle for them.
